The spiral lamp is made from a single piece of plastic sheet with slits in it. By bending it together and intermeshing it with itself, an intricate shell is formed.
The concept was developed entirely by experimenting with pieces of slit paper in 3D. No sketches were ever made. It explores the interaction between light and matter, the impassable and the transmissive, flat and voluminous, and growing complex forms from a simple starting point.
